It all started in the summer of 2018. Fresh from the sale of his BPO business in Asia, owner Rob moved back to his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, family in tow, and hungry for his next big idea.
It took a while. To pass the time and experience new perspectives, he took various gig economy jobs, and fell into the 3rd party food delivery business, where he soon discovered the plight of independent restaurant owners. Seeing an opportunity to help, he played with a number of different promotional ideas, never quite finding the right mix of service, value, and scalability.
A discussion with one Burlington Ontario restaurant owner, Nelson P, finally inspired him to what has become ExtraServings.
Why should I advertise? I'm already busy out the door on weekends. Nobody wants to help me fill seats mid-week.
Restaurants need help mid week and off peak. So what about a system that brings flexible, valuable customers into restaurants when they are slow? A 21st century happy hour, with all the advantages of digital: flexibility, control, capacity. Houston, we have a plan here.
Initial response was very positive, and by January 2020, the website was built, and business was ready to start. Rob along with a small sales team was preparing to launch in 3 American markets.
It's hard to help restaurants bring in diners when there's a global pandemic. Launch aborted.
So... Two more years in the incubator. A complete rewrite to be mobile first, and voila!
It's 2022, and it's all coming together. We're live in the App Store and Play Store, we're signing up restaurants and members in the Hamilton area, and will be expanding across Ontario in the coming months.
Nothing worth doing is easy, and so far, it hasn't been easy. But we're still here, and are looking forward to connecting Restaurants and Diners in a big way. Starting now!
